During the War of 1996, one of thirty-six City Destroyers was responsible for the destruction of Dakar, Abidjan and Kinshasa.[1] On the third day it landed in what would later become the National Republic of Umbutu and attempted to drill into the planet. Following the July 4th counteroffensive, the destroyer ceased operations, stopping its drilling, due to the destruction of the mothership. However, the aliens of the vessel continue to fight against NRU military forces for a decade until they were eradicated.

The destroyer was the only alien vessel that survived completely intact and was declared as a state property of the NRU. The Earth Space Defense and other government organizations were prevented from investigating the destroyer due to the NRU's strict isolationist policy. The destroyer remained dormant until it was suddenly reactivated on the beginning of July 1, 2016, forcing the NRU's leader Dikembe Umbutu to request the aid of ESD Director David Levinson to investigate the vessel. It was then learned that the destroyer had sent a distress call to the aliens' homeworld after their defeat in 1996, which was previously detected by human scientists. The distress call had been received and the destroyer reactivated in response to the answering signal. The aliens responded by dispatching a second invasion force to Earth.

Behind the scenes[]

  • The Umbutu Destroyer is seemingly a different design from the other City Destroyers depicted in Independence Day, having sets of landing struts and more concave appearance on its underside, giving it a more bowl-like shape.
