Hamburg is a northern German city-state and the second largest city in Germany. Located on the Elbe River about 100 miles from the entrance to the North Sea, the city was an important port and had a reputation of being very cosmopolitan.
On July 3, after the destruction of Berlin the previous night, Hamburg was the second German city to be destroyed by the German city ship.[1]
