The Pentagon is the headquarters of the U.S. Department of Defense in Arlington County, Virginia, across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C.
History
On the early morning of July 2, 1996, General William Grey, the commander of Space Command, was called to the Pentagon for a report on a space anomaly that had been detected approaching Earth. Upon learning that the object was slowing down, indicating that it was intelligently controlled, Grey immediately called Secretary of Defense Albert Nimziki. Throughout the day, Space Command tracked the entry of alien ships into the atmosphere as they approached major cities throughout the world.
The Pentagon was destroyed in the destruction of Washington.[1] About two-thousand Pentagon personnel survived by taking shelter in steel bunker beneath the Pentagon.[2]

At the time, Space Command was located at Peterson Air Force Base, near NORAD. In addition, US space operations were coordinated by the US Air Force, making it unlikely that General Grey, a Marine, would be in command.
