United States Space Command (USSPACECOM or SPACECOM) is a unified combatant command of the United States Department of Defense, responsible for military operations in outer space. Space Command was originally created in September 1985 to provide joint command and control for all military forces in outer space and coordinate with the other combatant commands.
History[]
On July 2, 1996, Space Command was informed by the SETI Institute of an extraterrestrial object that appeared near Earth's Moon. Although Space Command was impaired by poor satellite reception caused by the object, they were able to identify it as a massive alien mothership. Space Command continued to monitor the mothership throughout the day and updating its progress to the White House.
Appearances[]
Behind the scenes[]
- Space Command is erroneously depicted in Independence Day to be headquartered in The Pentagon, when in reality it was located in Peterson Air Force Base. In addition, U.S. space operations were coordinated by the U.S. Air Force, making it unlikely that General Grey, a Marine, would be in command as depicted in the novelization.
